Sydney is the most populous city in Australia. It is on Australia’s south-east coast, on the Tasman Sea. In June 2012 the greater metropolitan area had an approximate population of 4.67 million people. Inhabitants of Sydney are called Sydneysiders, comprising a cosmopolitan and international population.
Sydney is famous for its iconic Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. The vicinity of the metropolitan area is surrounded by national parks, and the coastal regions feature many bays, rivers, inlets and beautiful beaches, including the famous Bondi and Manly beaches. Within the city are many leafy parks, including Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Sydney is a consistently high-ranking world city for quality of life. The main airport serving Sydney is Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport and its main port is Port Botany.
As a dynamic arts and cultural hub, Sydney has many fine and internationally known museums, galleries and art centres, such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the White Rabbit Gallery, CarriageWorks, Brett Whiteley Studio, Museum of Sydney and the Powerhouse Museum.
Sydney hosts many different festivals and some of Australia’s largest social and cultural events. These include the Sydney Festival, Australia’s major arts festival which is a celebration involving both indoor and free outdoor performances throughout January, the Sydney Film Festival and many other smaller film festivals.
Sydney’s New Year’s Eve and Australia Day celebrations are the largest in Australia.
Sydney also hosts Australian Fashion Week in April/May and September. A survey based on tracking the frequency of words and phrases in the media cited Sydney as number 9 on a list of the world’s top fashion cities in 2009.
Sydney has hosted multiple major international sporting events in the past, including the 1938 Commonwealth Games, the 2000 Summer Olympics and the final of the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
Sydney is one of the popular spots in Australia for culinary adventure. It has a very diverse range of high quality restaurants, from awesome pub foods, cheap eateries, to the fine dining with a great view at Circular Quay. Sydneysiders are open to multicultural cuisines. There is even a website dedicated for food review in Sydney that consists of many different cuisines. And yes, Sydneysiders love their coffees, whether it is in the morning, mid-morning, afternoon, evening, it’s always coffee time.
